From Tolouse, France, we have progressive metalist Ahasver with their debut album “Causa Sui”. Formed from members from bands, such as Gorod, Eryne Non Dae, Psykup, Zubrowska, Dimitree and Drawers, Ahasver have created an 8 track story that follows the life of the biblical character that the band is named after. The progressive metal quintet has created a very strong debut album that will easily please many metal fans, especially those who are fans of bands like Machine Head, Gojira and Mastodon.
Ahaszer have combined a multitude of genres into this record, blending in elements of death metal, groove metal, metalcore, rap and doom, to name a few, along with their own signature style that will definitely have the attention of new listeners. The guitar work on the record isn’t the most complex thing to come out of the scene in recent years, but in its simplicity is where the true beauty lies, with every riff being just as unique as the previous, catching the attention of the listener as the tone is well and truly set. The drumming is superb and probably one of my favourite aspects on this album, powering through every song and displaying an incredible amount of talent and skill to set the tone of the record. The vocals are exactly what you’d expect from a record of this genre and after a couple of tracks, became a little too predictable and boring. The vocalist is definitely good at what he does and has definitely worked hard to get to the stage he’s at, definitely a talent there and no one can take that away from him. The performance is brilliant and definitely suits the style, but it’s nothing that fans wouldn’t have heard before.
Unless you’re completely defining the genre like the bands mentioned before, it’ll be a struggle to make an impact with music that is currently dated and lacks anything unique. Ahasver have created a great debut record, but I can’t see it breaking through anytime soon. With so many bands breaking the boundaries of what metal and alternative music can be, it’ll be a difficult job for “Causa Sui” to break through the noise. That being said, it’s a very enjoyable listen and definitely will appeal to some people. I look forward to seeing what these guys do next.
