With such a rich seem of music getting banded about from all over the world, it’s good to know the UK is still throwing bands at us every now and then, but especially in a style or genre that is more in keeping with European bands. Akkadian are Cambridge-based and probably the heaviest thing to ever come out of there – in a world of universities, pretentious nonces and row-boat racing, let’s have more of Akkadian!
I’m not a fan of EPs, and more often than not I get one, and I like it, and then I’m immediately disappointed because there aren’t enough tracks to woo me. I get the marketing campaign, though; release a nugget and the masses will want full-on gold, and these dudes are on track with that very ethos. The three songs that are available are immense, and immediately get to work on your ears, the rhythm in your soul and service that want for melodic style and pounding metal that are sometimes akin to Gojira, and in fairness we all love Gojira, because they know how to construct a song with brutal riffs, elegant melody, poignant lyrics and mix it together into a lather than can only soap up your need for epic metal, but I would go as far to say that Akkadian have the right moves to do exactly the same. I’d need more material to make a conclusive dissertation on this, but I’m staking my many years of listening to metal for many years to say that I may just have another band in that category of metal to listen to.
As a CV this EP serves up the potential that they have the tools to more than service the wants of heavier music aficionados of the world and if you need more than my word to push you into a decision just listen to the EP, which is the point in all this, but when the third track comes on, “Teardrop”, it really encompasses the band’s repertoire and what a full album will have to offer, and I can’t fucking wait! It’s been a while since a band of this calibre came forward to challenge great bands in the same genre, perhaps not since the 2012 effort by the band Scarred, from France who had the potential to even up the French metal scene in a big way but…well, I’m not sure what happened, but if you listen to their latest offering, you’ll think you’ve got the wrong band. But I digress because all is well, and we have this snippet of genius to hold as a torch to the dark future and hope that through this tunnel of progressive and groove-laden awesomeness, we’ll see the speeding train that is Akkadian come chugging through in a deliberate and epic album offering that will cement their place in music as a band that doesn’t fuck around when it comes to their musical offerings.
