Review By: Eric Wilt
I’m a sucker for well-written dissonant death metal, and Anachronism is bringing it in spades. Orogeny, their 2018 full length, was one of my favorites in the genre the year it came out, and their new album, Meanders, continues their trend of releasing thoughtful and thought-provoking dissonant death metal. Hailing from Lausanne, Switzerland, Anachronism has been together since 2009. After self-releasing their previous records, Meanders will be released by Avantgarde Music/Unorthodox Emanations on 27 January.
As with a lot of dissonant death metal bands, Anachronism also leans heavily into technical death metal. To experience this amalgamation of the two styles, you need look no further than album opener Contrasts. While the notes that the band chooses to play together are dissonant, the complexity of the song structures and the execution of the riffs and rhythms is of the highest technical proficiency. Guitarist/Vocalist Lisa Voisard employs a deep growl for most of her parts, although she can also scream in a black metal style, as is evidenced on the title track and Dialogues.
The whole album is as good, technical and dissonant death metal as you will find anywhere. Not only is it amazing the first time through, but the songs on Meanders reveal new parts of themselves on subsequent listens. I expect Anachronism will wind up on more than a few best of lists when 2023 is said and done.
