If you’re a fan of Cerebral Rot, then you were probably pretty bummed when they disbanded just about the time they were hitting their stride. Of course, it wasn’t the end of theworld, since guitarists Ian Schwab and Clyle Lindstrom heralded the coming of their new musical endeavor in the very same announcement. And now, one day shy of a year since they announced their new band, Schwab and Lindstrom, along with bassist Jason Sacks and drummer Jesse Shreibman, are ready to unveil Corpus Offal to the world.
The good news is Corpus Offal didn’t stray too far from the path that Cerebral Rot was on. In fact, on songs like Spinous Forms of Mortal Abhorrence and the title track, you would be forgiven if you assumed you were listening to unused recordings from the Odious Descent into Decay sessions, as the production on Corpus Offal sounds very similar to the production on Cerebral Rot’s debut. And these guys are still in the business of creating sickening specimens of old school death metal. Their songs still feature barbarous guitars, thick bass sitting front and center in the mix, punishing drums, and filthy vocals spewing forth rancid morsels of perversity.
One difference between Cerebral Rot and Corpus Offal is the length of songs. While Cerebral Rot, on their second outing, was moving toward writing longer songs, with two of the tracks exceeding the seven-minute mark, Corpus Offal only has one track below six minutes and that’s the intro. Besides that, Corpus Offal contains two 6+ minute songs, two 7+ minute songs, one 8+ minute song, and one 12+ minute song. And while you’d think that much old-school death metal would run the risk of getting boring, every song on the album feels like it’s just the right length.
While there are plenty of old-school death metal bands out there these days, there are only so many as good as Cerebral Rot was. Fortunately for fans of the genre, Corpus Offal has arisen from Cerebral Rot’s grave and has released an album full of ferocious, fungus-dripping death metal that will satisfy even the most diehard fan of their old band or any OSDM band.
