Review By: Eric Wilt

Deathcore darlings Crown Magnetar recently signed to Unique Leader and wasted no time in putting out some crushing new tunes on their current label. Alone in Death is only an EP—featuring six songs and clocking in at 20 minutes—but considering their last full length came out less than a year ago, they’re still working at a fairly speedy clip. Hailing from the fertile metal mountains of Colorado, the band features Nick Burnett on guitar, Dan Tucker on vocals, Byron London on drums, and Grant Robinson on bass.

The songs on Alone in Death harken back to the early years of deathcore but with the benefit of modern, sharp-as-a-knife production. If you cut your teeth on Through the Eyes of the Dead and All Shall Parish, you’re going to like what Crown Magnetar brings to the table. The focus here is on the composition as opposed to pimping out the songs while in the studio. The kick drum is triggered, and there are a few tasty bass drops scattered throughout, but Crown Magnetar lets the songs do the talking. Additionally, they will have no trouble reproducing these songs in a live setting, which I trust will please the purists out there.

At this point, I would normally pick out a few standout tracks to discuss, but it’s impossible to do that here because they’re all bangers. If you like speed, they got it. If you like breakdowns, there are crushing breakdowns in every song. Vocals your thing? Tucker easily shifts between a gut-wrenching growl and a hair-raising screech. Both deliveries are great. A fan of guitar work, are you? Burnett plays like a man possessed. After one listen to this EP, you’ll understand why Crown Magnetar are the talk of the deathcore town.

In my experience, deathcore is one of those genres that you either like or you don’t. If you like deathcore, get excited because Alone in Death rips, and there are big things on the horizon for Crown Magnetar.
