Welcome back to the metalepidemic.com review hot seat. This is Snidely Whiplash for a second run at showing you where to find quality rock and roll. Hope you enjoy!
Today we’re taking a close look at the band Entierro! The new release El Camazotz, named after the Mayan bat god of night and death, begins with a pounding set of drums and guitar on The Penance that made me want to bang my head violently all the way through. It gave me a nice high energy ride through to the next song, The Tower, which dropped down and let me breathe for a second. Good low-tempo intro which then brought me back up to hit the next song The Past. This CD is a roller coaster ride of feelings all the way through the 4 originals on the release.
We got some kick ASS dual guitar riffs from Victor Arduini and Chris Begnal, definitely channeling that Judas Priest, Queensryche vibe in the solo sections. Then they duelled it out on a couple ripping solos as well. These guys can play! The drums leave no doubt that they’re solid and very in your face. Dave Parmelee has the word melee in his name for a good reason – that dude beats the hell out of these drums! He could have done the old double bass drive on every song, but he didn’t. That, to me, says skills galore and Victor being one of the guitarists from Fates Warning, no surprise there!
Christopher Taylor Beaudette plays a solid bass, which is commendable, but does it while he’s screaming out some very solid and rocking vocals. A little rough and clear like a Rob Halford, but in a lower register like a John Bush from Armored Saint. Very rocking and totally fitting the style they have. This band hits hard and fast, while at the same time having a groove in the songs as they pound through them all.
As if to leave me no choice but to give them a solid comparison to someone, they added a cover of the Judas Priest song Call For The Priest. I have to say that I like this version a little better than the original. Are they JUDAS PRIEST? No. They aren’t. That sounds like a let down, but it isn’t. I actually think they added a little touch of their own to it and made it an Entierro song more than a Judas Priest song cover. That’s what you want out of a cover, a new version, and they delivered. Well done, guys!!
