Hey, kids! It’s your old pal Snidely Whiplash again, back in the metalepidemic.com review hotseat for some more tongue blistering words of wisdom and recommendations for your summer rock. Let’s take a quick look and see what Snidely has in the hopper for cooking today!!
Today we are dusting off a classic. This is the band from 1973 called Fargo. They have released their newest album called Strangers D’amour, this being the sixth release for these rock and rollers. So, today ol’ Snidely is going to have a tough time. I really dislike giving anyone’s hard work a bad review. So let’s begin with the positives. Musically, this band sounds great. They should. They’ve had a long time to tighten up and realize their sound. I went over and over this review trying to find something to latch on to and make it sound better, but I just couldn’t do it. While they musically have a hard rock feel, the singer makes me drop right into the Robert Palmer, Dire Straits feel. Take that as a compliment or an insult depending on how you feel about those bands. The vocals go for a David Coverdale type of feel, but don’t really reach it.
Musically, this band is tight. The bass player sits great in the pocket and rocks nice and hard. The guitar player rocks out some awesome solos and his rhythms are deep and dirty. The overall feel of the songs is good. They have great breaks and drops, the drummer carries every tune in rock solid style with classy fills delivered with taste.
Here’s my problem. In today’s climate, lyrics mean just as much as the rest of the song. Having cheesy, throw away lyrics just won’t do anymore. We’ve lived through bands like ACDC going from bad lyrics to getting a little more complicated. The grunge era made sure they had to have some kind of meaning, and that meaning had to be deeper than in the past. The lyrics on this seem dated and overly simple at best. The singer delivers them with a straight, Dire Straits type of voice that doesn’t really fit in the music and sits in the wrong spot for me. NOW, that being said, if you like Dire Straits and the sound of Money For Nothing, and lyrics that follow right along with “Money for nothing and chicks for free.”, this band is perfect for you. I can’t get past it. That’s just my opinion. Take that however you want.
