Foot is a relatively unknown band hailing from the land down under, Melbourne, Australia. Despite having formed in 2016, the band has already released a steady stream of albums through the years, including two in 2020 alone. Headed up by guitarist and creative consultant, Paul Holden, Foot has gone through a revolving door of musicians and close friends to get where they are today. Holden has managed to steer what is essentially a solo project into a prime force within the small but growing stoner rock scene. Now Foot is ready to push forwards with their latest release, You Are Weightless, with all the fuzz you could ever want.

Bitter starts things off with a bang, a fun, groove-ridden earworm of a song that I can’t stop playing on repeat. The guitars are punchy, but not suffocating. The drumbeat is incredibly catchy, and the vocals are reminiscent of Josh Homme’s distinct style. Needless to say, it’s my favorite track. Caged Animal feels even more floaty with the keyboards and reverb turned up to 11 to really get the acid rock vibes pumping. Fire Dance is the heaviest song on the album, with the main riff sounding like a slower High on Fire tune that you can headbang to. Gold Lion leans heavily on the desert rock influence by giving us bluesy interludes between the heavier riffs. I’ll Be Just Fine is the other standout track I’d like to mention. An extremely catchy opening riff leading into another extremely catchy chorus. Impossible I feel is the first misstep. It’s not overtly egregious in any way, but it does feel like filler. Scared bookends the album, and it’s much the same as before. Overall solid but lacking that special something that made the early songs such a bop.

I will say that the band nailed the atmosphere that they’re going for on the cover; that of floating through the majesties of space. I’m remembering that South Park episode where Kenny gets high off of cat piss and trips so hard he flies through space and time on a rocket powered DeLorean with a big-titted babe at his side. When I play this album, that’s the first thing that comes to mind, tripping balls and soaring through the cosmos, which, I suppose, was the intent. That being said, this album is as hard and as heavy as a giant fuzzy blanket. It doesn’t assault you with sound, more like gently caresses you with those trippy sonic vibrations. So, if stoner rock isn’t your thing, this isn’t the album for you. But if it is your thing, then You Are Weightless is worth checking out.
