Review By: Anthony Petitt
Combining sensibilities ranging from pop to modern rap to metal and more, the debut album by From Fall To Spring is difficult to pin down or label. Incorporating all of this could potentially lead to tonal whiplash, but the album, entitled RISE, is able to capture all of these sounds and still keep the songs sounding cohesive.
BR4INFCK features rapped verses, a glorious Post-Hardcore-like hook, and the background synth textures help keep the sound full. The song is polished, but the drums and guitars still shine through. BLACK HEART has versatility in the vocals, from aggressive rapping to a high chorus to brutal screams.
Released as a single and up for consideration in the 2023 Eurovision Song Contest, DRAW THE LINE is another strong track. From Fall To Spring channel Linkin Park here, complete with infectious hook and heavy breakdown. The band gets poppier (though not full-on pop) on SUPERNOVA, a song with a huge and dynamic sound, full of stops and starts, that helps to break up the more aggressive tracks. The following interlude, titled AWAKE, is short and relatively forgettable in the grand scheme of things.
LIGHT UP THE SKY has a lighter feeling (no pun intended) while holding onto heavier elements like breakdowns and screams. It just gives off a good vibe! I particularly enjoy the bounce of the drums and the levity of the vocals, especially put together. BARRIERS is straight pop, with prominent electronic elements. It’s well-made, and if you like this style, you will probably find it enjoyable. It’s a slight deviation in sound, but the band makes it work, and I didn’t find myself skipping the song on repeat listens of RISE.
BEASTMODE could serve as a fighter or wrestler’s entrance music, and that very well may have been the intention: a hype song. RISE ends with THE CURSED ONE, a fairly generic rap-rock song. Despite that, this first record has some real gems to be found throughout!
