Let me begin by saying that Urban Legends is a truly awesome album from start to finish. It is a fantastic mix of old school heavy rock and modern melodic rock done to near perfection. How JeaniceLee have not been signed up to a major record label is utterly astonishing – somebody has not been on the ball here and spotted a great rising talent. JeaniceLee are a four-piece outfit from Edinburgh made up of frontwoman Jeanice Lee (Vocals and rhythm guitar), Marco Morelli (Lead guitar), Leen Hodge (Bass guitar) and Tony Hodge (Drums).
Overhaul opens things up brilliantly – a rebellious tune showing a side to the band that will get your blood pumping.
Back In Our Cage follows it up, showcasing Jeanice Lee’s unique vocals, as well as the rest of the band’s talent, whilst From The Ashes contains a fantastic guitar solo highlighting Marco Morelli’s skills as an axeman.
Liquid Gold is a faster number with Tony Hodge showing what he can do with the sticks. Never Was is probably my favourite track, it reminds me so much of a classic Bond theme tune because it is constructed musically in such a way as to create the mental image of an epic film set.
Devine Red Roses delivers a slower, darker tone with a heavy, churning riff and some nice backup vocals. Walk Away From Me which leaves you wanting more, and then the album closes superbly with The City We Used To Know – a chilled song showing a much softer side to the band with echoes of sadness, broken dreams and a cool bass riff from Leen Hodge.
JeaniceLee have delivered an album where all eight tracks could stand on their own as individually released singles. An awesome release, well worth checking out!
