Here At The Ashram is the first album from Laces Out. Taking heavy musical cues from Post-Hardcore outfits such as Fugazi and At The Drive-In, the album plants the seeds for a great career from Laces Out.
Kick And Scream is the energetic first track. In true Post-Hardcore fashion, the song is both catchy and heavy. Very memorable! Chemicals is very bouncy and “Indie-ish”, and the cathartic screams toward the end of the tune add to the emotion. Tempos slow down and brooding guitars snarl on the killer third track Impulse. Check this one out to see what this band is capable of!
Stability brings in the genre-staple of dissonant arpeggios, while forlorn vocals float above like rain clouds, before the storm that is the ending of the song. All In could be a forgotten track from the In/Casino/Out sessions (this is high praise coming from a massive At The Drive/In fan). But it gets even better: Ipkiss Please is unbridled in its heart and raw power, and I think the same can be said for the following track, Jacob.
The frenzied guitar on Shooter is interesting in that it rapidly switches between chords and quick riffs. In fact, the song itself is quick, clocking in at only two minutes and change. I neglected to mention before that Laces Out is a three-piece, a unique situation in a genre overwhelmingly comprised of quartets and quintets. What they lack in personnel, however, they make up for in droves with their songwriting and evident vitality. The future of this type of music is in good hands.
Post-Hardcore is not a genre that everyone will gel with, but if you are looking to dip your toes in, this album is a great choice!
