One of the more enjoyable power metal bands out there these days is Sweden’s Majestica. Led by the extremely talented singer and multi-instrumentalist Tommy Johansson, Majestica is back with Power Train, their third full length, and the first since their seasonal classic A Christmas Carol. If you’ve ever seen Johansson’s cover videos, you know there’s nothing he can’t play or sing. He’s one of those people who make the creation of music seem effortless, from composing to performing, he barely breaks a sweat. He’s joined on Power Train by guitarist Petter Hjerpe, bassist Chris Davidsson, and drummer Joel Kollberg, and together Johansson and Co. offer up more evidence of the band’s power metal prowess and magnificent musicality.
Majestica’s music is full of energy and melody. From the blazing guitars and keyboards to the soaring vocals; from the pounding drums to the thumping bass, Majestica plays a brand of power metal that is upbeat and joyous even by power metal standards. Not to mention the fun the band has with their lyrics which, like all the great albums in the genre, feature mythical creatures and fantastic realms. Songs like the title song, Thunderpower, and Victorious will get listeners out of their seats and their fists in the air. Not even their mid-paced songs like No Pain, No Gain and Megatrue will fail to put a smile on your face. And that’s not even mentioning epic anthems like My Epic Dragon and Alliance Anthem, which transport the listener to another world, much like they took listeners back to Victorian England with A Christmas Carol.
If you are a fan of power metal, you have to give Majestica a listen. From their straight-ahead power metal ragers to their epic symphonic bangers, they are quickly becoming the band I compare all other power metal bands to. Power Train is going to be the album to beat when December rolls around and we start making our power metal year-end lists.
