Review By: Anthony Petitt
Exit Through the Wormhole is the very first album by heavy trio Mystery Dudes, a band based out of Oslo, Norway. Their debut features eight songs, beginning with Mountain of Chill. Don’t be fooled by its name though, this song has energy to spare, along with some tasty guitar licks.
Those Mystery Dudes deliver epic doom riffs and Ozzy-style vocals on Evil Blood, and dial up the riffage on Ghost Train, which also features a cool hook. The lyrics found here are generic, but seeing as English is most likely a second language for Mystery Dudes, this gets a pass. The band ventures out into some non-standard time signatures on the song Punk to great effect. I particularly dig the heavy riff that starts immediately after the vocals are finished.
Nebula is an instrumental, and the highlight is the distorted bass work. Mondo Hopeless (another instrumental) follows, and this one grooves HARD and builds and flows in a satisfying way. These two songs may be the best on the album. Witch’s Stare is no slouch, however, with a very cool, sinister sounding riff that simply doesn’t get old. Exit Through the Wormhole starts out fine enough, but really improves in its second half with songs like Nebula and Mondo Hopeless.
The album ends with the punky Mexican Stand Up. The song is very high-energy and the guitar in particular goes all-out here, culminating in a cacophony of feedback, ending the record and sending us out of the wormhole and back home. If Exit Through the Wormhole sounds like a record you would be interested in owning physically, the band is offering a variety of colored vinyl.
