Voir dire: As I begin writing on this sweltering Sunday morn, I can faintly hear the harmonies from the choir that is currently performing psalms and hymns at the church down the street before they are drowned out by each of the ultra-Satanic tracks on the fifth full-length studio release from Nunslaughter… And I can’t help but laugh!
And now that I’ve caught my breath… on to new business!
Opening statements: For me personally, as a low-key constant in American Death Metal for almost 35 years, Nunslaughter has been and continues to be one of the most reliable cohorts of solid Satanic Metal and Red Is The Color Of Ripping Death holds very true to what they’re known for. Of course, they haven’t just been sitting back and takin’ it easy. Since the release of their last full-length album, they have put out (And I’m not even bullshiting you here!) more than 50 official EP’s, Splits, Live albums and demos!
So… Fuckin’ Hell… Apparently productive hands are also the devil’s workshop. Or playground. Or whatever.
Cross examination: Don Of The Dead, vocalist and founding member, may have actually found the right crossroads and cut a deal with the Devil, because I can’t find another explanation for his consistency. The guy has been killin’ it for literally decades and sounds almost exactly the same as he did when I bought the album Goat and first heard him almost 20 years ago! And it’s truly great to see that, since the untimely demise of Jim Sadist, Don Of The Dead has collected a solid group for musicians to continue the band’s blasphemous legacy. The drum work of Tormentor goes a long way to fuel the brutal pace of the album. Wrath‘s guitar work is solid and tight. Which Detonate compliments quite well by way of his bass playing effort.
Closing arguments: Regardless of your specific taste in Death Metal, a bad word can’t be said about the longevity, perseverance or skill of Nunslaughter. And with this release, they’ve given two tickets to Neckbreak City! It’s everything that Satanic Death Metal has always been. And everything that Nunslaughter has always been. After all this time, I’m glad to hear that they still carry the same torch and that it is still burning like the morning star!
Verdict: If you’re looking to build up those Corpsegrinder-esque neck muscles with some good old-timey music in praise of the great Satan then Red Is The Color Of Ripping Death is definitely an album for you! And based on their release schedule you can expect plenty more in the near future because, just like the devil, Nunslaughter is always working!
