Feed the Monster is the cracking new Alternative Rock/Metal album by Italian band Onyria. Formed in Bolzano, Italy during 2012 this is the bands second album release following their debut recording Break the Silence in 2015. Onyria is Helena (vocals), Simon J Gillman (guitars), Flo Magagnosc (drums) and Valerian Fourmy (bass).
Opening track Denial is a fast, hard rocking tune which nicely shows off Helena’s vocal capabilities, with her demonstrating clever changes of style and tone. The pace increases and the mood darkens for Living the Lie, which has a very heavy bass undertone delivered by Valerian Fourmy to go with much more intense vocals. No Obedience keeps the momentum going, with a super catchy riff, and reminded me very much of The Pretty Reckless at their best.
Be Yourself is a much slower offering with an excellent guitar solo from Simon J Gillman and some fantastic warbling vocals from Helena. It’s a great breather before Drowning begins with some punchy drumming from Flo Magagnosc, and again Helena shows her vocal prowess with clever changes of pitch and tone throughout.
Insane begins as an insanely fast track with full-on punk attitude, giving it a hard and gritty edge – love it! Little Man is a much softer and slower number that has a slight pop feel to it to go along with a lovely and memorable chorus. The pace picks up again with Blind Nation, an angsty song with strong emotional vocals to match the very heavy rhythm.
My favourite track, Still Here, shows the bands more emotional side with a slow burning, more traditional hard rock song that has all the ingredients to become a future classic! Final track Price of Souls is an awesome way to close out the album, it’s another heavy riffing, hard rocking tune that leaves you begging for more.
It took me a couple of listens to really get into Feed the Monster by Onyria, but once I did, I could not stop playing it. It’s a fantastic album that I would highly recommend to any fans of alternative metal or female fronted metal, as a superb collection of songs that will grow and grow on you. Onyria are a very talented band, with Helena’s vocals just giving them the edge they need to stand out from other similar groups within the genre.
