Melodic metalcore quartet Our Mirage come back swinging with their 3rd release “Eclipse”, following a string of singles being released throughout the last 2 years. This release sees the band in a new but familiar light as they deliver their usual message with a new drop-tuned sound. Our Mirage have taken a lot of modern elements from current metalcore bands and added their own powerful rock sound to it.
On first listen, the notice of a lower tuner is immediately noticeable and brings a heavier edge to the band. In the past, Our Mirage has thrived on their melodic approach to their music, creating songs that were closer to rock than metal while still incorporating elements to bring them into the metalcore radar. “Eclipse” takes the older material and cranks it to 11, adding in heavier riffs and breakdowns to a very melodic album, taking them to a whole new level than previous releases. The band have evolved and made an album that is a stand-out from the rest of their catalogue, but reminiscent with their original sound that will ring familiar with older fans. Tracks like “Vicious Cycles” and “Learn to be Alone” show the 4-piece bring a much heavier side to them that hasn’t been heard before, and it’s very welcoming to hear.
One of the defining elements of Our Mirage is Timo Bonner’s singing, dominating every track. His voice is truly unique and matches the style they’re going for; it would be difficult to imagine this band with someone else. The harsher vocals make more of an appearance throughout “Eclipse” as well as several rap sections scattered around to make things interesting. Timo is definitely a very versatile vocalist, and his range can be fully appreciated on this album.
Our Mirage have definitely found a sound that really brings out the best in what they have to offer, and the new album is amazing to listen through. The mixture of both metalcore and rock elements is a refreshing mix to hear and definitely makes this a very accessible album for new and old fans of the band. The band have released half of the album as singles throughout the last 2 years, so hopefully it has got fans excited instead of taking the surprise out of the release, but I am very excited to see what the band does next.
