Bristol metalcore trio Profiler are up next with their self-titled debut EP, and they are not playing around. The band have taken elements of nu-metal, alt-rock and metalcore and blended them to from this stunning display of musicianship, lyrically tackling subjects such as addiction, going for your dreams and tackling eternal issues within ourselves. On first listen, you wouldn’t think this was a first release: the sound is so defined that makes the listener they’ve been at this for years.
The intro track for the EP, “We Are Extinction”, was enough to get me pumped for this release. A short build up track that leads to a crushing riff that had my head rolling, followed up by an upped tempo section accompanied by some nice synth worked that would definitely bode well in a live environment. If this is how they start up their debut release, then I am well and truly invested to see how the rest of the EP plays out.
We then go onto the band’s first single of the record, “Miserable”. The track blends from the previous track, straight into a nice groove that mixed with some ambient orchestration that really brings a great feel to this song and has the listener engaged right to the broken-down verse. The vocals sound and melody feel like they came from the early 2000’s era of alt-rock and nu-metal, mixed in with some more aggressive screaming that’s more attuned to modern day metalcore. “Glitch Theory” takes a more old-school route while still maintaining the tech/metalcore vibe throughout, ending the track with a riff that would make the likes of Periphery proud.
“Alpha Nine” is probably the most nu-metal driven song on the EP, featuring verses with some Deftones inspired vocals and a build-up with an almost rap vibe that could have come straight out of Korn’s playbook. The song keeps up the energy all the way through before ending to our final track “Hypocrite”, another groovy riffed track, topped with a huge chorus that’ll definitely have the fans singing over and over.
An EP for me just isn’t long enough. Considering the consistency of incredible material these guys have released, they need a full length and I highly doubt I’ll be the only one, especially after listening to this EP. The feel throughout this record has got me wanting to jump out of my chair, it’s so infectious and quite frankly, I can’t keep it together. Profiler have created a monumentally impressive debut EP, and it’s no wonder the guys at Sharptone Records have decided to back the metalcore trio. This band is going to be making waves after this release drops, and I am already hungry for more.
