The Watcher of All EP by Australian band Psycroptic has really annoyed me.

You see, I’m getting on a bit. I own 7 inch records as well as 12 inch records, vinyl, if you will.  These were, in pre-digital days, known as ‘singles’, most had 2 songs, usually known as ‘side A’ and ‘side B’ and we could also purchase cassettes with the same 2 songs.

In the late 80’s, we then adopted Compact Discs, a product that promised far superior sound quality to our records, but in reality, diluted the atmosphere we got with a cheap scratchy needle in our pre-pubescent midi hi-fi systems. These ‘CD’ singles had 3 or even 4 tracks on them, if only to comply with the official Chart requirements at the time.

What has this got to do with the latest release from the, rather enjoyable, Psycroptic release? Well, in a display of, what can only be described as ‘confident Juice’, the band have released a 2 track EP for our very metal consumption.  As a result, I shall say this once, and only once.

2 songs is a single! An ‘A’ side and a ‘B’ side.

Side ‘B’ is usually a song that is not on the album from which the single is released. However, the promotional material from Agonia Records advises us that the standout track, is ‘A Fragile Existence’, which leads to the question, why name the EP after a track they consider not the ‘stand-out’ song?

The truth of the matter is that ‘The Watcher of All’ EP is 2, very enjoyable, examples of superior Technical Death Metal that will leave you disappointed that there is not a full album in support until later next year.

A quick look on Bandcamp will show that a few US dollars will procure these songs, and it will be well worth your cash checking them out, supporting a band who could, quite probably, blow your mind when they release their 8th album in 2021. I, for one, look forward checking it out.
