Old-school death metal is seeing quite the resurgence these days, and I, for one, couldn’t be happier. From the bombastic death metal of Gatecreeper and Undeath to the gnarly death-doom of Void Rot and Mortiferum, the new generation of bands are slinking their way out of the sewer in droves to unleash a storm of old-school death metal on the unsuspecting masses. Joining the party on 25 July 2022 are OSDM upstarts Sedimentum, whose debut album, Suppuration Morphogénésiaque, will surely propel them to the top of any list or discussion of old-school death metal.
The first thing you notice when you press play on Suppuration Morphogénésiaque, is that the album’s production is gritty and raw. Eschewing the polish that compressing gives an album, Sedimentum chose to leave their record uncompressed, and this decision gives the music a truly authentic feel. If you close your eyes, you could believe that it’s 1991 all over again, as you try to figure out what kind of crazy music is coming out your speakers. But it’s not 1991, and if you’re going to play old-school death metal in the 21st century, it can’t sound unoriginal and derivative. Sedimentum avoids this pitfall, as their music pays homage to the forefathers of death metal without sounding like a rehashing of albums that have already been made.
Another thing you will notice when you listen to this album, is that the bass is overdriven to the point that it almost sound like another guitar. The extra layer this creates is especially useful when Sedimentum slows things down for one of their many doom sections. The vocals are low and guttural, and they blend perfectly with the music that sounds blasted straight from the gutter.
Sedimentum create heavy and gritty old-school death metal that death metalheads new and old are sure to love, and Suppuration Morphogénésiaque is sure to speed them to the front of the death metal crowd.
