Review By: Tyler Sharkey

Deathcore fans, rejoice! There’s a new super group that has been slowly forming over the last year, and they’re finally ready to show everyone what they’re made of. Taking members of metalcore heavyweights like Betraying The Martyrs, Uneven Structure, Novelists FR, and Kadinja, nu-deathcore group, ten56. have created a sound that, if described in one word, could only be called devastating. The first half of their debut album, Downer, drops November 26th. I’ll give you my thoughts on it, but please, listen for yourself then.

Here’s what I liked about Downer: Part 1. It’s heavier than a planet. More massive than a black hole. This EP just slams. From start to finish, the six song track list assaults the listener with some of the most brutal and chaotic sounds ever heard in metal or any subgenre. Vocalist, Aaron Matts, is also quite the monster on this record. I’m only slightly familiar with his other, bigger band, Betraying The Martyrs, but he seems to have brought a new level of brutality to this project not heard on previous works. Everyone really brought the heat on this record. If you’re looking for music to crush your very soul, this is it.

There’s not much I didn’t like about this EP, and most of my criticisms are simply personal preference. I’m not really a fan of nu-metal, and it does have a strong influence here. However, the way ten56. have blended it with the deathcore genre is at least interesting and engaging, and has me curiously wondering what else they might do with it on later releases. I really think this album could be a big influence on future artists and the genre as a whole.

In conclusion, if you’re looking for something bone-crushingly heavy but also grew up on bands like Slipknot and Korn, look no further than ten56. and their new EP, Downer: Part 1. Check it out on November 26th.
