Review By: Tom Scott
There have been many efforts by bands of this genre in the past where attempts to amalgamate certain genres have fallen into the old trap of becoming messy and pretentious, but THÅRN with their latest effort, ‘COLLISIONS’, have crafted a sound that just…flows.
Don’t get me wrong, this release is by no means easy listening with its barrage of tortured screams and relentless gloom but the London based duo, consisting of Luke Booth and Jerome Barre, have spawned a visceral four tracks that boast a masterful grasp of the Post-Metal and Post-Rock genres, with evocative passages of meditative soundscapes and crushing, drone-riff guitars.
This release really gave me early 2000s Cult of Luna vibes with nods to their ‘The Beyond’ and ‘Salvation’ albums, which, in my book, is certainly something to be proud of. In terms of the sub-genres’ staples, ‘COLLISIONS’ has well and truly nailed what you would come to expect from a collection of songs with these influences and is certainly a noteworthy release for THÅRN. This is not an album to be played at a friends birthday party by any measure, instead, to be experienced in all its cathartic entirety.
