Philly’s The Age Of Truth display a firm determination to give us the goods on their sophomore album, Resolute. Their press release did my job for me on the for fans of section by listing Clutch, Corrosion Of Conformity and Soundgarden and that sums them up rather well, the Soundgarden comparison evident in some vocal passages.

Now of course FFO sometimes just means this is who the band sound closest to, but Resolute will genuinely please fans of the aforementioned bands, not because of the genre, but the quality which certainly tugs at the trousers of the big boys in the room. I have no idea what that means, but I’ll leave it in as you get the gist.

Horsewhip (Video below) is where they may just get a tug at not just the trousers, but the socks too. Along with the other single, Salome, this is TAOT at their best. I can hear some Zakk Wylde in the vocals of Salome and like BLS, there’s a well balanced mix between melody and rhythm. The socks might not match, but they compliment the shoes.

It’s not all rock, though as Seven Words is an acoustic led mellow outing that I hesitate to describe as a ballad as it’s also somehow got an edge to it a bit like the slower Down songs. It’s a small song in the scope of the album, but it stands out all the more for it and I enjoyed it every bit as much as the rockers.

The only real drawback is that with songs coming in at up to 9 minutes they can drag a bit in places with A Promise Of Nothing being the worst culprit. But although that means the skip button may be tempting at times, it’s a trap even the best bands fall into.

So will they ever be able to tug at the actual underpants of the big boys in the room? Well, they’re good enough to say who knows, rather than not a hope in hell which is where most bands sit. One I’ll return to.
