Budapest’s Vidékek Vannak Idebenn bring us their 4th full length album and continue a new path, inspired by experience and a need to further explore the dark and atmospheric art that fuels their creativity. As noted in the accompanying press release, this represents a “Soundtrack to the next phase of his life” building on what has gone before and to explore those themes that have inspired them to take this next trip.
It’s certainly a mood piece, and to really appreciate it I think that you must have a love of this genre of music, because if you want your music to move, this may not be for you. Although it falls within that doom genre, it leans more into the soft and gentle side of things, and although there are heavier moments, it’s controlled and there just to build the song. It is melancholic, brooding and fully loaded with beautiful passages as Dávid Makó takes us with him on this journey into his dark moments.
Liminal is a standout on here, full of his soaring vocals, building to an electrifying end, and indeed, each song has that great build to it. I can appreciate it for what it is, which is a great collection of songs, well written, and arranged, and you can really get the emotion from them, which I think was the main goal.
Fans of this music, and of doom in general, will find a lot to enjoy here, because of that emotional heft that Dávid brings to each of the songs, which can often be missing from other releases of this genre. It would be interesting to see how he would play these live, how they would develop in that setting, because you get the feeling that in smaller, more enclosed venues they would take on new life.
