The Necromancers are back, with a new album and a new singer. Where the Void Rose marks the third album from the French quartet. It starts off strong with Sunken Huntress, alternating between the bouncy main riff and the speedier Maiden-esque verse riffs, both equally infectious. The song delivers fans a healthy balance between groove and heaviness.

Crimson Hour brings down the tempo, but not the intensity. The vocals here are soulful, and the other instruments flow around them perfectly. The placement of a slower song like Crimson Hour as the second song on an album is a bold one, and some may be put off by its eight-minute runtime. Satisfying and technical guitar harmonies receive a bigger focus on The Needle, but don’t subtract from the songs ability to make you move. Where the Void Rose is slightly scatter-brained stylistically, but the good news is that they are adept at every style they try.

The next track is Orchard, an anthemic mid-tempo song. Orchard will pull you in with its heavy, brooding nature and hook you with its delicate guitar work. Title track Where The Void Rose is heavy on atmosphere. The song features some mighty fine bass playing, that props up a stellar vocal performance. Vocal work from new singer Basile Chevalier-Coudrain is full of grit and personality. This song is proof that a song doesn’t need to be superfast or have virtuosic playing to be seen as great. It’s a highlight of the record.

The final song on Where The Void Rose, Over The Threshold, is no slouch either, and is chock-full of fun riffs, well-executed drum chops, and the equally adept vocal acrobatics which have come to be expected. The Necromancers aren’t exactly breaking a ton of new ground sonically on this release, but any fans of the band’s influences should give it a listen regardless.
