It’s difficult trying to stand out in the music scene, especially as a metalcore band, with most bands sounding like a “rinse and repeat” of the previous bands that came before them. Until I Wake are breaking the mould by powering through the alternative scene with their debut album “Inside My Head”. In their very short career, they have achieved a lot, including touring with bands such as Attack Attack and Crown The Empire, as well as signing a record deal with Fearless Records. Until I Wake are primarily a metalcore band, but they also incorporate a lot of hard rock influence with elements of nu-metal, rap and pop. These guys are definitely in the running to be one of the next big thing in the alternative scene.
Every track featured on “Inside My Head” has its own uniqueness that separates it from the other tracks on the record. With some of the tracks like “Forsaken” and “Still Sinking” delving more into the metalcore area, and other songs like “Reasons” and “Undeserving” exploring with more mainstream genres and taking a slower ballad-like approach, Until I Wake have created a very accessible album for fans of every variety. Even with the shift in genres throughout, the atmospheric feel throughout the album keeps true and doesn’t make any track feel out of place. Cody Johnson’s vocal work on the album also is very impressive; exploring his range with screaming and singing throughout every song and really showcasing his talent. The music and the vocals really complement each other, and the combination creates a sound that would resonate with fans of the early 2010 metalcore era bands.
Catchy anthemic choruses, groovy metalcore riffs, drop tuned breakdowns and verses that fans from all musical backgrounds can really enjoy, Until I Wake are the full package and if they aren’t on your radar yet, they certainly will be once this album drops. “Inside My Head” is nothing short of enjoyable and an incredible listen. Some of the elements may not be completely unique and feel like it’s been done many times before, but they also bring a spark of ingenuity and deliver more than expected, which will make them a force not to be reckoned with.
