Pagan and folk metal are a specific genre of music that not many people can get into, and to be fair, it is a hard genre to get into if you don’t know where to start. And in the case of The Wolves Of Avalon, it’s not the place to start if you want to get into the genre. The album itself is just okay, but not much in terms of standout material from the band in the ever-growing sea of ‘gimmick’ bands. And really, it’s a bit all over the place.

Starting the album with a monologue before it kicks in on Through The Murdering Night, you’d think it would burst out with energy, but it does feel a bit lethargic and a bit of a let-down as vocalist Metatron growls his way over the band’s instrumentals. It could be a perfect transition track into second song Men Of Gododdin, but it fades out and starts anew, but that’s just me being picky.

During Men Of Gododdin it’s a mix of genre’s, but not including their folk aspect of things. It sounds more like a Rob Zombie song at times and when the chorus kicks in it’s as if you’re listening to Ziltoid from Devin Townsend, and it’s the lack of consistency in the song that really throws me off and makes it a dizzying affair.

The Shining Company & Dead Men’s Cloaks are, in all honesty, forgettable. There’s nothing stand-out here, and it feels like a case of filler rather than anything else to just pad for time. Ending track Is This How It’s Meant to Be was how I was feeling when the album ended. It felt like an empty album, devoid of anything that would make it anything better than an ‘Okay’ album. Quite a let-down, really.
