Ah, Canada, home of superior Black Metal…. This is something I never thought I would hear myself saying, but it is true. Wolf Hex is the 3rd full album by Canadian band, Wormwitch, and it is an absolute beast!

First track proper on the album, ‘Canadian Denim Mountain Attack’ is a full throttle opener, oozing Black Metal vibes, with its riff and production, it is a joyous romp through it’s 4 minutes and 19 seconds. It immediately settles you into the album, raising expectations through the roof!

Raised expectations are not always a good thing, and so it is great to find that Wormwitch doesn’t let up. ‘Wolves of Ossory’ is the next track up and it maintains the momentum, albeit in a less immediate and frenetic manner with it’s slower into, although it does fire up once the song proper kicks in.

The good times continue until we are hit with an interlude for over 2 minutes, and I hate pointless interludes as it often disrupts the momentum in a similar manner to this paragraph.

Fortunately, the boys are here to magically pick things up immediately after with. ‘Abracadabra’. With a rabble rousing riff, it invokes a period of muted headbanging and fist pumping. Great stuff!

After that, the album doesn’t let things slide again, with a host of consistently good tracks leading to the final cover version, Metallica’s, ‘Hit the Lights’. Perhaps a tad unnecessary considering the sheer quality of what has come before it, the track does at least allow the band to enjoy themselves, and stretch the, rather short, album out.

Wolf Hex is an incredibly strong example of modern Black Metal. Full of well-crafted songs that elicit a very metal response from the listener, it is hopefully the album that will propel Wormwitch forward. With superb musicianship, great dirty vocals and riffs that just make you smile, Wolfhex is the Black Metal album you need to hear.
