Review By: Mary Young
Another suitably bobbins drive in the weather is on-point for Manchester, but luckily the three bands tonight bring the fire and my travel woes are soon forgotten. It’s my first time at Satan’s Hollow, and I’m struck at just how compact it is, with the stage sat bang in the middle of the room. It’s lit up as you might expect, adding to the atmosphere, and has a well deserved reputation of being one of Manchester’s hot spots for live music.
URNE, in support of their latest release, promise a night of intense noise, but more of them later. Three different bands, three different styles, all providing something completely different from each other.
Tribe of Ghosts
Tribe of Ghosts are up first, the Brighton 4 piece creating a mighty blast, with the dual vocals coming in on the back of some machine gun drumming. It’s super tight, with patrons coming in, being battered by this infernal but joyous noise. New single False Gods is prime dance material, all soaring vocals but underpinned by a crushing backline. Their songs are multidimensional, not just relying on a heavy attack as they mix up being soft, almost gentle then go for the throat. They get so much out in their allotted time; each song is received with enthusiasm, and they are someone to watch out for as they absolutely killed it here tonight and with the dual vocal of Beccy Blaker and Adam Sedgewick they have a formidable pairing that can deliver killer performances. I think it is a given that larger venues await them and would love to catch them on their own run. Check them out, and also their socials for live videos, absolute quality (4 / 5)
Mountain Caller
Mountain Caller, now the fine folks at Church Road Records introduced me by way of The Archivist, and I’m stoked to see the three-piece live. And it’s just spellbinding. They just get up and floor you. I didn’t think that instrumentals, a whole set of them would work, but it’s just awesome. It’s the sort of music that inspires people to pick up instruments and learn. The sound they generate is something else. They know how to write heavy music that is infused with THOSE moments that make the hair stand up on your arms. The best is that they just get into their zone and let it rip. March of the Göll is just crazy heavy live and just moves like you wouldn’t believe. I think I’m in love with them, they have everything needed to just pummel you and do it with a smile (5 / 5) (obviously biased)
URNE
URNE detonate and straight from the off you can see why they have the buzz they do. The guitarist just stalks with a tone you could split rock with. It’s ferocious, with a power that belies them being a three-piece, and they command that you headbang. They channel pure riff goodness that can only be good for the soul, and they invite you into their church to form part of their congregation, at least for a Sunday night. Becoming the Ocean, is an absolute banger that should be the feature music for something equally intense. It is so fiendishly tight and unrelenting in attack, and it shows that slow or fast it doesn’t matter because the end result is just weapons-grade metal.
They put it all out on the stage, and you can see it in their faces what it means to them to be out there. There is a natural and organic way to them, especially in the way they chat between songs, with that infectious humour that makes it feel as though we are sat in their front room. They just make it look so easy and despite Joe Nally being under the weather he doesn’t stop until he cannot give any more. I have been lucky this year to catch some great bands live, and tonight I’ve seen one of the best that the UK has to offer. If you get the chance to watch these in any capacity, headline, festival, whatever, you should move heaven and earth to do so. To miss out on these would be nothing short of criminal (5 / 5)
What is evident is the camaraderie between the three groups, all watching and willing each other to go farther, hit harder. It’s brilliant for us, and for me, it’s one of my gigs of the year. You owe it to yourself to check these out, absolutely fantastic night.
