It’s finally time to discuss Ulcerate‘s latest album, Cutting the Throat of God. There’s no other band that has my trust as much as Ulcerate. Ever since Everything is Fire, they’ve delivered unique and unapologetic chaos, brutality, and emotional depth, which is rare in technical death metal. Thus, my expectations for Cutting the Throat of God were almost unrealistic.

Ulcerate could have taken the easy route by replicating the same album repeatedly. However, their previous releases show the band isn’t content to do so. Ulcerate aims to evolve continually, incorporating subtle changes into their winning formula. This is evident in Cutting the Throat of God, where dissonance persists, but there is much more room for melody and atmosphere. This shift might raise a few eyebrows, but Ulcerate does it their way, ensuring it remains as violent as possible.

The album is absolute mayhem and could leave you feeling numb in a corner. However, there’s a fresh aspect to this release. The production has notably improved; there’s more texture to it. Though still claustrophobic, it doesn’t hit like a wall of sound anymore. So, don’t worry—Ulcerate might have more build-up sequences, but it’s still going to hit like a tsunami.

Do I have any issues with Cutting the Throat of God? Not really. Perhaps there could be a more pronounced change between the last three tracks, or the album could be shorter, as it might be challenging for those not used to this type of metal. However, overall, this is as heavy as it gets.

Ulcerate shows again and again that they are the band to beat within extreme metal. You might not like what it sounds like, but you can’t ignore it. I can’t think of any other band in the last 10 years that has been so consistent while continuing to evolve with every release. It’s a true testament to the talent of these three individuals. While I’ve named Replicant and Maere as interesting releases in the grotesque metal category, Ulcerate proves once again to be the apex predator in these waters.
