Majestica are symphonic power metal band from Sweden. Who for six albums, since their inception in 2004, were probably better known as ReinXeed. A Christmas Carol is their second album under the moniker of Majestica and, according to virtuoso Tommy Johansson, a silly little dream come true.

A Christmas Carol is the power metal pastiche of the famous Dickens story and liberally borrows motifs from many popular songs of the season. Which means that you had better prepare your brain for a series of earworms catchier than the (co– ugh cough) flu in a nursing home.  Yet, sadly, those ghosts will be haunting more than just grumpy old book keepers this year.

With busy passages and dizzyingly kinaesthetic solos there is a lot to unpack here on A Christmas Carol. But, Majestica and Co. present it with an articulate finesse. You can expect great riffs under your tree or in your stockings from these veteran metallers.

Be rest assured that there is never a dull moment. There are parts of reprieve, we are given a half-time power ballad in the form of The Joy Of Christmas, but never a boring mood. The guys have really put a lot into this album, and it shows in how thought out the pacing is. If it was on stage it would be a perfect show but as it is, it is a fantastic production filled with horror, glee and majesty. Much like its source material but with a brighter and bombastic metal twist.

A Christmas Carol is a funny fit for the bands’ dramatic songwriting.  However, the craziest thing about this album is that it had to happen. Someone had to do it. And Majestica have done an excelsior job. Capturing both the spirit of Christmas and the essence of Dickens’ tale.  While utilising an orchestral flare and playing with whimsy Majestica are bringing hot coals to these dark and cold northern nights. It is festive. It is fun. It is Xmas.

Majestica have got a glee inducing creature comfort in their sack. In part Mike Oldfield, with a hint of Wizzard, and wholly a lovely take on an old tale. Updated to work within todays’ media. Bursting with energy like your belly after Xmas dinner. This take on the Victorian tale is a delicious and satisfying feast fit for tiny Tim and the rest of them.
