Anytime Defeated Sanity releases a new album is a cause for celebration. As one of the most technical brutal death metal bands out there, Defeated Sanity, with each new album, sets and raises the bar for what a brutal death metal band can be. And what Defeated Sanity is all about on their new LP, Chronicles of Lunacy, is mind-melting brutality.
Led by drummer and songwriter Lille Gruber, and filled out by vocalist John Welshman, guitarist Vaughn Stoffey, and bassist Jacob Schmidt, Defeated Sanity made a concerted effort to take a step back from their last two albums, which leaned more to the jazzy and progressive, and make an album so brutal it would leave no doubt in fans’ heads who the kings of brutality are and will be. And on Chronicles of Lunacy, they succeed brilliantly. Brutal to the nth degree, Defeated Sanity’s new album is filled with the filthy riffing and breakneck drumming that put the band on the extreme metal map in the first place.
From the pulverizing power of the opening track Amputationsdrang and the breakneck blasting and off-time drumming of The Odour of Sanctity to the rumbling bass of Condemned to Vascular Famine to the grooving of Heredity Violated and everywhere in between, Defeated Sanity has filled Chronicles of Lunacy to the brim with the brutal death metal that they are known for.
I know it’s late in the year for a top-ten album to drop, but I would not be surprised to see Chronicles of Lunacy on more than a few year-end lists.
