Dozer are quite rightly considered one the big names in the stoner genre, transporting the desert grooves of Kyuss to the snowy wastes, injecting a syringe full of psychedelic hallucinogens courtesy of Monster Magnet, before wrapping the whole lot in a handwoven blanket of Nordic fuzz.
Originally a digital only release, the 2013 Vultures EP is the latest of the Dozer catalogue to be reissued by Heavy Psych Sounds, following the band’s first three albums last year, and Through The Eyes Of Heathens (2005) and Beyond Colossal (2008), due in the next couple of weeks.
Vultures was recorded between 2004-2005 with the six tracks used as pre-production demos for the aforementioned Through The Eyes Of Heathens album. Although the label ‘demo’ feels a little misleading as this assumes a raw, bare bones quality, whereas these are complete, fully fleshed out songs with production to match any ‘proper’ record. A more accurate label might be ‘proof of concept’.
Dozer fans will probably have downloaded a copy of the digital version of this EP, and therefore be familiar with the combination of the seismic bass and snarling fuzz that make up the likes of The Blood Is Cold and Last Prediction, the turning riff that winds its way sinuously through the middle of The Imposter, and the simple but effective stomping groove of the title track. However, as a way of enticing reinvestment Heavy Psych Sounds are dangling a juicy carrot, not only with some funky coloured vinyls, but also with the inclusion of a bonus track, the previously unreleased cover of Sunride’s Vinegar Fly.
