HELL YEAH metalepidemic.com fans, it’s your boy Snidely Whiplash, back in the review hotseat to show you what rocks and what sucks! Let’s take a trip to Finland and see what they’re doing on the other side of the planet. Where the rules seem to be different, but the rock stays true and hard.
Today we’re looking into a band called THY ROW. A rocking group from Finland, and boy do they. This is a band that reminds me so much of Pretty Maids that I can’t help but head bang my way through this one! Rock solid from start to finish. Sometimes when old Snidely does these reviews, I can get through a verse and a chorus and I’m ready to stop and move to the next song. I found myself rocking like a beast on this one. The grooves made me want to bang my head and turn it up loud!
From the tight rhythm feels to the screaming vocals, I am lost in this one. From the rocking sound on The Road Goes On, to the cool, yet subtle harmonies on Horizons, this one never lets up! Mikael Salo has a rock solid voice, right in that pitch that works perfectly on every single song. Damn, he makes me smile that people can still do that like he does. Dirty, and smooth, high and screamy, too soft and perfect. Love it. Jussi Laulainen and Ville Vase are both shredding on the guitar. I’m not sure who did what on there. They are as tight and precise as Degarmo and Wilson from Queensryche, or even Glen Tipton and K.K. Downing of Judas Priest. These two guys shred together. Juho Jokimies on Bass and Teemu “Snake” Laitinen on Drums fill this one out with a huge rhythm section that just hits like a brick wall falling on you. Tight, blasting, and full of energy. This one hits nice and hard.
Overall, this band is like the next coming of Pretty Maids for me. I loved that band when I first heard them, and I’d be disappointed if this one didn’t keep going in that direction. It’s a precise niche they fill, and fill it they do. When I first heard the band name, I had no idea what to expect. In some cases those can be an issue, in this one they’re in a weird little groove where they can do whatever they like and get away with it. Very kick ass, and it’s going in my favorites pile for sure!
