Hailing from the ever growing metal scene of Denmark, the progressive four piece known as, DEADNATE, take the best of icons like Metallica and Gojira and add their own unique brand of progressive metal, creating a refreshing sound that is both awesomely fierce and wonderfully melodic. The group saw instant success with their debut ep, Concrete Flood, in 2018, leading to them playing shows and festivals alongside popular acts such as Eyehategod. These experiences strengthened and inspired the quartet and they quickly began writing the material that would become their first full-length album. Recording it in the form of two, five track eps, DEADNATE are ready to present the first chapter of that debut record called, The North Sea Pt. I.
Opening the record is the instrumental track, Aurora. A solid introduction that starts off quiet with a catchy, clean guitar melody and light symbol taps from the drums in the background. The calm quickly intensifies however with a build up of distortion and pounding percussion that transitions seamlessly into the next track, Downhearted.
Downhearted kicks off with a smashing and chaotic guitar riff before being met with some ferociously harsh vocals. We also get a taste of the bands clean singing and their incredible harmonizing capabilities here. I get major Alice in Chains vibes from this and I’m not complaining whatsoever.
Next we have the title track, The North Sea. DEADNATE really show off their musical prowess on this one filling the song with captivating guitars, haunting harmonies, and passionate screams. Every beat and note played here is perfectly placed and executed. A personal favorite.
Wrapping up the first half of The North Sea is Winter. At nearly seven minutes, this track is an epic piece of metal musicianship. Harmonized guitars lead us from a tall mountain top down into the depths of a dark, gloomy passage before being met with mesmerizing vocals. This goes on for a minute, slowly churning into a blistering storm, before unleashing all hell on the listener as massive chugs and commanding vocals ensue. A well written song that ends the first half in a strong and memorable way.
I literally have zero criticism here. DEADNATE know exactly what they’re doing and they do it very well. Once the full album is released I have no doubt that this band will get noticed very quickly. Be on the lookout.
