Formed in 2008, German groove metallers, Shockgnosis, are back with their sophomore album, ‘Be Chaos ::: Be God‘!
These guys focus heavily on the gutturals, which work well with the heavily down-tuned and distorted guitars. As expected, the groove is here, seen on tracks such as ‘Six Nails‘ and ‘Days Of Dawn‘. There are also some very good melodies and harmonies here, as heard on tracks such as ‘Crux‘. There are some great basslines on this one also, on tracks such as ‘77‘.
The whispers in the melodic section of Days Of Dawn almost remind me of Korn, across this entire track the vocalist sounds very Jonathan Davis like, which is definitely not a bad thing, they are different enough to not be deemed a Korn imitation group, but similar enough to notice the styles. It’s great!
As the album closer, we have a cover of the Kreator hit, Renewal. It’s heavy, strong and melodic in all the right places. They’ve made it their own without straying too far from the original, just far enough to make it known that it’s Shockgnosis behind it.
The album runs for around 50 minutes, it doesn’t overstay it’s welcome, but leaves you wanting more, in the same way any good album should!
Overall, a great sophomore album by the guys. The guitar work is exceptional, offering a range of harmonies, melodies, heavy riffs and face-melting solos! The drums offer blast-beats and syncopated rhythms, the bass is thunderous with an amazing tone, and the vocalist screams every word with pure passion. The choice of the whispers really add to this bands versatility, too! I have no doubt these guys will only grow bigger, and I look forward to watching them. Definitely worth your time.
