ZAND
Self coined genre bending “ugly pop” artist, ZAND, took to the stage as the opening support to Scotland’s VUKOVI. Not an easy task considering this is the final night of the tour, it’s in Glasgow, and the crowd are primarily here to see VUKOVI. However, that doesn’t seem to phase ZAND. Armed with just a mobile phone of backing tracks, and a shitload of attitude, ZAND proceeds to deliver a selection of recent singles and tracks from the 2020 debut EP, Ugly Pop.
As fiery and fierce as ZAND is in their delivery, the set does take a little bit to get going. But the vocal hooks on tracks like ‘Slut Money’ do start to bring the crowd on side, and you can see the fire in ZAND start to ignite. My only issue was, the lack of bodies and instruments on the large TV Studio stage makes ZAND look even more solitary, and I wonder if this type of solo show would be best suited to a more intimate venue, where ZAND could interact and have more of a connection. That being said, I get the feeling this is only the beginning for ZAND, and these straight-talking performances are only going to grow into something bigger

VUKOVI
After having the pleasure of speaking to the band before their final show of the tour (video below), we knew they wanted big things from the Glasgow crowd tonight. But, to be honest, with the amount of absolute bangers on their new album, NULA, it was inevitable the energy would be high.
VUKOVI waste absolutely no time at all, booting the door off the hinges with ‘LASSO’ to open the show. The thick guitar sound that graces the new album sounds even bigger live, and vocalist Janine springs around the stage like a sugar-overdosed kid at a Birthday party, whilst still sounding vocally impeccable.
The anthems continue with ‘C.L.A.U.D.I.A’ and ‘HURT’ before launching into the foot-stomping, ‘QUENCH’, and it quickly becomes very apparent how good this band are in a live setting. The tracks, old and new, sound just as good as they do on CD, but with an added sonic punch. The energy on stage is electric, and it’s crazy to think it’s all being generated by just 3 people.
The band continue to deliver a great selection of hits, with some older bangers being thrown in to please long-time fans of the band. ‘Behave’, ‘Violent Minds’ and ‘I’m Sorry’ from the 2020 album, Fall Better, have the crowd captivated, and ‘Colour Me In’ from the bands debut album provides a good breather before they ramp up the intensity in the last part of their set. The band bring the show to a close with, as Janine put it, “La Di Fuckin’ Da”, and it’s a great moment, which sees ZAND join the band on stage for some additional stage-diving carnage.
Back in 2017, we championed the band on our website, podcast and radio show. We knew back then these guys were something special, and to see them now, headlining, and selling out massive venues is such a great feeling. The sky is the limit for VUKOVI, and we can’t wait to see what they do next
