As you would expect from an album called Genetically Engineered Monstrosity by a band named Tortured with horrifying cover artwork by none other than Jon Zig, this release is all about gruesome and grisly brutal death metal. Although this is Tortured’s debut full length, the music contained within sounds like it was written and recorded by seasoned pros. This is no doubt in part to the experience of guitarist Oscar Ortega of Cystectomy and Strappado fame. Joining Ortega on this masterpiece of the macabre are Flo on vocals, Alex on bass, and Frank on drums. Containing nine songs and lasting 29 minutes, Genetically Engineered Monstrosity is a crash course in barbaric brutal death metal.

Bathing in Pus blasts out of the gates at breakneck pace full of raging riffs and blast-beats, and the guys in Tortured seldom slow down. That’s not to say that they don’t add some slams now and then to add a little variety to the mix. Raised by Punishment and Human Bait contain some sick slams, while Devouring What’s Left of You begins with a slamming riff that reappears later in the track. Mushed Up and Boiled to Death are also standout tracks on an album that doesn’t contain a bad song. Fans of brutal death metal will find much of the revolting and repulsive to sink their teeth into on this slab of gruesome goodness.
