If Danko Jones (the man, not the band) ever decided to diversify into the lucrative market of celebrity self-help books, his wouldn’t be a particularly large volume. In fact, he could probably get away with a single side of A4, simply emblazoned with the slogan ‘Fuck shit up and have a good time!’ in large red letters.
It’s a refreshingly straightforward manifesto, and one that has served Danko Jones (the band) well over the last 27 years. As the Danko Jones (the man) says, “we’ve carved out a sound, and we’re sticking to it.” True to his word, Electric Sounds is stuffed with “songs about rocking, wanting to rock and enjoying life while rocking.”
First up Danko Jones (the man and the band) ask us to Guess Who’s Back, the answer, a sneering “Me motherfucker!” means that this is the song that you want as a soundtrack to every entrance you ever make. This is followed by the muscular new wave strut of Good Times (where the aforementioned slogan becomes a gleeful earworm).
From then on there are zero surprises, just shit-kicking electric sounds. The likes of Stiff Competition, and I Like It packing more pumped-up masculinity and barely concealed sexual energy than can be found throbbing away in dozens of pairs of leather trousers at a Tom Jones lookalike competition.
So, not reinventing the wheel, but having a bloody good time enjoying the ride!
